Serbia's external deficit in 2009 amounted to over USD 7.71bn, which was 42.3 percent less than the year before, Statistical Office stated on Thursday. The value of exports amounted to USD 8.34bn, which was a 24 percent decrease when compared to 2008, while the value of imports amounted to USD 16.06bn - 34 percent down relative to the previous year, the final data for 2009 showed. The tendency of decline from the end of 2008 continued in 2009, the main cause of which was the global economic crisis, which led to the drop in economic activity in Serbia and in the world. Serbia's major foreign trade partners in exports in 2009 were Bosnia and Herzegovina (almost USD 1.02bn), Germany (USD 870.7mn) and Montenegro (USD 836.2mn). The country's major foreign trade partners in imports were the Russian Federation (USD 1.97bn), Germany (USD 1.96bn) and Italy (USD 1.55bn).
