NBS Governor Radovan Jelasic said on Friday that the government is under obligation to make the decision on the sale of Telekom Srbija by the end of 2009. The government opted for this move, Jelasic continued, in order to secure undisturbed financing of EUR 8bn of the current payment deficit this year. "Govt. pledged to sell Telekom" "To my knowledge nothing has changed, I don't know of any other sources of financing, but anything's possible," said the central bank chief. The government's economic and fiscal policy memorandum, singed with the IMF and published on the NBS website, states that a tender for the sale of Telekom or an IPO of the company's shares, would be announced this year. While the media in Belgrade mention Deutsche Telekom as the most likely buyer of the state-owned Serbian telecommunications firm, the German company's representatives declined to offer any comment on the issue.
