National Bank of Serbia (NBS) Governer Radovan Jelasic, G17 Plus, says a pro-EU government is the key condition to implement Serbia's economic policy in 2008. Jelasic told the Vojvodina Chamber of Commerce in Novi Sad on Wednesday that "only such a government can halt the rising inflation and reduce it to the planned single-digit levels". According to Jelasic, the exchange rate of the national currency against the euro is "more stable and stronger than ever", adding that the new NBS regulation, due to come into force on July 1, have already resulted in many banks acquiring additional capital and thus increasing the amount of foreign currency on the market. Serbian Chamber of Commerce (PKS) President Milos Bugarin said at the same gathering that all reforms in Serbia should aim to create a much more favourable business climate and to attract direct foreign investments. Bugarin added that Serbia needs "over one billion dollars" in investments every year in order to speed up the economic development.
