Serbians hand in 350 illegal weapons in ongoing campaign

This has been announced by the head of the Interior Ministry (MUP) Administrative Affairs Directorate Zorica Loncar-Kasalica.

She emphasized that citizens have been handing in automatic and semi-automatic weapons as well as hand grenades, and that the biggest response was in the country's most populous cities - Belgrade, Novi Sad, Nis, and Kragujevac.

"Citizens can choose whether to take their weapons and safely hand them in at the police station, but they can also call the nearest police station and the police will come and take over the weapons," Loncar-Kasalica told RTS.

Asked if the result could have been better, she said that "any result, when it comes to illegal and unauthorized possession of weapons, is good - because it is important to remove arms from the street."

Loncar-Kasalica stressed that the MUP has once again given the citizens the opportunity to safely surrender their illegally held weapons or request their legalization, and that during this period, the citizens are not criminally liable or under any obligation to explain the origin of the weapons.

Over the last year and a half, she recalled, there have been two such campaigns when about 10,000 pieces of weapons and over 200,000 pieces of ammunition had been handed in.

"Since June, 100 requests for legalization of weapons have been submitted. Only personal security weapons can be legalized, such as pistols and revolvers, and hunting and sports weapons," she explained.
