Pressure on Serbia to the breaking point; Removing Russian energy sources from WB is U.S. strategic interest
U.S. President Donald Trump has signed a new law declaring Washington’s removal of Russian gas and oil from the Western Balkans a national interest of the United States, media reports say.
The U.S. President has signed the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2026.
This act explicitly mentions the removal of Russian energy sources from the Western Balkans, which, according to media reports, directly targets Serbia as well.
Under Item 16, it states:
“Dependence on Russian sources of fossil fuels and natural gas by the countries of the Western Balkans ties their economies and policies to the Russian Federation and hinders their aspirations toward membership in the European Union.”
Item 17:
“Reducing the reliance of Western Balkan countries on Russian natural gas and fossil fuels is in the national interest of the United States.”
Item 18:
“The growing influence of China in the Western Balkans could also have a detrimental impact on strategic competition, democracy, and economic integration in Europe.”
Pressure on Serbia is reaching the breaking point, media outlets conclude.
