Hostage crisis and shooting in Dortmund end as Serbian suspect surrenders PHOTO/VIDEO
A man believed to be a Serbian citizen, who allegedly shot at a police officer in Dortmund on Tuesday and then barricaded himself in an apartment with his three children, surrendered to police this morning after hours of negotiations, German media report.
Police said that the 51-year-old suspect voluntarily left the building at around 3:30 a.m., after which he was arrested without resistance, according to Der Spiegel.
The three children who were in the apartment were not injured.
The police officer who was hit during the incident sustained only minor injuries thanks to the bulletproof vest he was wearing.
The incident began last night when the suspect’s wife called the police and requested assistance.
When officers arrived at a mixed residential and commercial building in the Höchsten district of Dortmund, the man allegedly fired at a police officer and then barricaded himself inside his apartment with the children.
Police also deployed a special operations unit to the scene, while the investigation into the circumstances of the case remains ongoing.
According to police, there was never any danger to passersby.
The German newspaper Bild reported that the suspect had earlier caused an incident at a restaurant in Dortmund, where he allegedly threatened patrons and used pepper spray before fleeing in a car.
According to the same source, when police attempted to stop him, he fired a shot through the vehicle’s window and hit a police officer.
Police have not yet confirmed these allegations.
