A hostage drama has been reported in the Ahrweiler district in Germany. A large number of police officers are currently present at the scene.

According to the Ministry of the Interior, the hostages are being held inside a Volksbank branch in the city center. The operation has been ongoing since 9 a.m., and special police units are on site.

According to Bild, helicopters are circling above the bank.

Initial reports suggest the incident began after an armored truck stopped in front of a Volksbank branch.

One employee reportedly stepped out to enter the building, when an unidentified man allegedly intercepted the driver and threatened him, according to unofficial information. The hostage-taker and the employee are now reportedly inside the bank vault.

“Authorities currently believe that several perpetrators and hostages are inside the bank. One of the hostages is the driver of a cash transport vehicle,” police said, adding that the situation on site is currently stable.

“There is currently no danger to citizens outside the cordoned-off area,” the statement added.
