Dramatic warning: "If the Americans land, total destruction will follow"
Valerii Zaluzhnyi, the former Commander‑in‑Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, warned that a possible U.S. ground invasion of Iran would end in a military catastrophe for the United States.
According to him, modern technologies and attrition-based strategies make the presence of ground troops in such conflicts nearly impossible.
Zaluzhnyi, who still serves as Ukraine’s ambassador to the United Kingdom, drew several parallels between the war in Ukraine and the escalating conflicts in the Middle East in an article for the British Telegraph.
According to his claims, changes in combat paradigms have neutralized the traditional advantages of large military powers.
He also noted that Ukraine’s resistance demonstrates that even smaller nations can successfully confront more powerful aggressors by employing asymmetric tactics.

“The speed at which past wars unfolded in the region has created many illusions. Major changes on the fronts of the Russo‑Ukrainian war have altered the paradigm of warfare, and consequently the very essence of combat capabilities for those who might wish to test them,” Zaluzhnyi wrote.
The Concept of the “Kill Zone”
Zaluzhnyi notes that Ukraine’s experience demonstrates the effectiveness of the “kill zone” concept, in which unmanned aerial vehicles achieve full control over a territory.
Therefore, he emphasizes, if U.S. forces attempt a landing, Iran would likely employ a similar attrition-based strategy.
In such conditions, sending soldiers into the kill zone becomes a fatal strategic mistake, Zaluzhnyi added.
“It is very dangerous if any side tries to test how the ‘kill zone’ functions in desert terrain. It will be a catastrophe,” the general emphasized.
Zaluzhnyi believes that at present only three countries possess the real capacity to wage this type of modern warfare: Ukraine, Russia, and Iran.
He emphasized that political will and technological adaptation allow these nations to maintain combat capabilities that exceed their economic or demographic resources.
His warning comes at a time when the U.S. and Iran are exchanging threats following Donald Trump’s ultimatum regarding the Strait of Hormuz.
Observers also note that the U.S. is rapidly deploying warships with thousands of marines to the Persian Gulf, fueling fears of a possible order for a ground offensive.
