United States attacks Iraq; Another country engulfed in flames; Fatalities reported PHOTO/VIDEO
The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that U.S. and Saudi Arabian armed forces carried out precision airstrikes against targets in eastern Iraq, striking logistical sites and weapons facilities belonging to Iran-linked militant groups.
CENTCOM also stated that more than 600 attempted attacks on U.S. citizens and facilities in Iraq were recorded between February and April, allegedly carried out by Iran-linked militias, according to U.S. claims. The command warned that the IRGC and affiliated groups must stop such attacks to avoid further U.S. military action.
Iraq calls emergency meeting
Iraq's Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) said today that U.S. and Saudi forces carried out strikes on its headquarters in various parts of Iraq, resulting in significant casualties and damage to its facilities.
According to the statement, at least 20 of its fighters were killed and 32 wounded in strikes across seven provinces.
The PMF said these figures are preliminary and could rise as assessments on the ground continue, Al Jazeera reported.
Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi has called an emergency meeting of the National Security Council following the U.S.-Saudi strikes overnight.
The office of Al-Zaidi announced that a detailed statement regarding the events and the decisions made will be released after the meeting.
The PMF condemned the strikes by the United States and Saudi Arabia as a "dangerous escalation" and a violation of Iraq's sovereignty and official security institutions, Al Jazeera reported.
They added that the relevant authorities are monitoring the situation on the ground while assessing the damage and losses incurred.
Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Defense confirmed that retaliatory strikes were carried out against Iran-backed groups in Iraq, adding that the attacks were coordinated with the U.S. Central Command.
The ministry said the strikes were a response to drone attacks on Saudi territory, particularly targeting oil-producing regions.
Meanwhile, Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthi movement condemned the U.S.-Saudi strikes on Iraq's PMF today and claimed that it had shot down a Saudi reconnaissance drone over Saada.
