Trump: The U.S. could return to negotiations at some point?

The United States could return to the negotiating table with Iran at some point, U.S. President Donald Trump said today, adding, however, that the situation is “so good” right now.

Trump also said a day earlier that the United States had no talks scheduled with Iran, adding that the U.S. might return to the negotiating table one day, although, as CBS News reported, he appeared unconcerned about the talks being on hold.

“Maybe at some point. But right now, I think the situation is so good. Maybe at some point,” Trump said in response to a question about whether the U.S. would return to negotiations.

He again stressed that Iran must not develop nuclear weapons, adding that this has been a condition for successful negotiations since the beginning of the war.

“Look, it’s very simple. They have to completely give it up—no nuclear weapons. Iran cannot have nuclear weapons. Do you know why? Because they would use them. And we’re not going to let that happen. So, Iran cannot have nuclear weapons, and it will not have them,” Trump said.

He also confirmed that the United States has many ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, apparently referring to reports that the U.S. Navy is helping some oil shipments pass safely through the strait.

“A lot of ships passed through last night. We have possession, complete control of the strait, I think, apart from interference. And there is interference when they occasionally fire drones. Not all of them will get through, but they are getting through, and in the past few weeks we’ve had quite a lot of oil coming in. It won’t be perfect, but a lot of oil is getting through,” Trump said during a tour of the helipad currently under construction in front of the White House.
