Europe is boiling with anger
Official Brussels reacted sharply after the publication of the so-called 28-point peace plan for Ukraine, which was secretly developed by Russian and American officials.
EU foreign ministers will meet today in Brussels, in a session chaired by EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell, with the main topic being the proposed plan that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has rejected.
Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares stated that no peace plan for Ukraine can be successful without the active participation of Ukraine itself and the European Union.
Ahead of the meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels, Albares stressed that the plan must guarantee the existence of a sovereign and democratic Ukrainian state, Reuters reported.
Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski said that Europe must be consulted on peace initiatives concerning Ukraine.
He emphasized that although Europe supports peace efforts, it is essential that it be included in the decision-making process.
‘We command the peace efforts, but of course, this is about Europe’s security. That is why we expect to be consulted,’ Sikorski told reporters in Brussels, according to Reuters.
The minister added that Ukraine should not be restricted in its ability to defend itself, stressing that any limitations should apply ‘to the aggressor, not the victim.’
EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas also stated that any plan to end the war in Ukraine will need the support of both Kyiv and Brussels.
‘What we, as Europeans, have always supported is a lasting and just peace, and we welcome all efforts to achieve that. Of course, for any plan to work, Ukrainians and Europeans are needed,’ Kallas told reporters upon arriving at the EU foreign ministers’ meeting in Brussels.
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul was also outspoken, stating that all initiatives aimed at starting peace talks in Ukraine are welcome, but he reiterated the position shared by many of his European counterparts — that Kyiv and the EU must be included.
‘And Europe will have to be included as well,’ Wadephul added.
