The U.S. told Zelensky: Give up territory, army, weapons — you have to
The U.S. has signaled to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that he must accept a peace plan that would require Kyiv to give up territory and weapons, Reuters reports, citing two unnamed sources.
According to the Financial Times, the plan was drafted by a group of current and former Russian and U.S. officials, and this week it was delivered to Kyiv by U.S. President Donald Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff.
One unnamed source described the 28-point plan as “largely favorable to Russia,” while another called it “very comfortable” for Russian President Vladimir Putin, the Financial Times reports.
The plan would require Ukraine to cede the remaining eastern regions of Donbas — including territory currently under Kyiv’s control — and to reduce the size of its armed forces by half. It would also achieve long-standing Kremlin political objectives, such as recognizing Russian as an official state language and granting official status to the local branch of the Russian Orthodox Church. The plan would further require Kyiv to agree to give up key categories of weapons, which would include a reduction in U.S. military aid.
Putin has made similar demands to Kyiv since the beginning of the Russian invasion nearly four years ago, but Ukraine has repeatedly stated that it will not accept them.
Zelensky, who met with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in Turkey, is scheduled to meet U.S. military officials in Kyiv on Thursday.
