The German army entered another country
Germany today permanently deployed a 5,000-strong armored brigade to Lithuania, the first official German deployment of military forces abroad since World War II.
The newly created 45th Armored Brigade, commanded by General Christoph Huber, was officially activated during a ceremony outside Vilnius, and a temporary headquarters was established.
Huber said that the mission of this brigade is to ensure "the protection, freedom and security of our Lithuanian allies on the eastern flank of NATO", reports Politico.
"By doing this, we are also protecting NATO territory and Germany itself," the general said.
Berlin has promised a long-term deployment of the military in 2023, ending decades of a defense policy that avoided permanently stationing combat troops abroad.
For NATO, the deployment is a critical part of the alliance's transition to advanced defense deterrence, and Lithuania also welcomed the move due to the insecurity of the Baltic region since the start of the war in Ukraine, the Brussels paper said.
