Severe weather system approaching Serbia; Alert issued as conditions may turn dangerous
Serbia’s Hydrometeorological Institute has issued a warning for heavy rainfall across the country expected from tomorrow, March 27, through Sunday, March 29.
The Republic Hydrometeorological Institute also stated that although it will be warm today, a moderate to strong southerly and southeasterly wind will be blowing, with occasional gale-force gusts in some areas around midday and in the afternoon.
According to the statement, cloudy conditions with rain and local showers are expected on Friday and over the weekend, with thunderstorms possible in some places, while snow is expected in hilly and mountainous regions.
Locally, heavier precipitation of 40 to 80 mm is expected, and in some areas even more, over a 72-hour period. In the mountains, between 10 and 30 centimeters of new snow is forecast. The weakening and cessation of precipitation is expected on Sunday in the second half of the day.
Cloud cover arriving from the west
Gradual cloudiness from the west is expected during the morning hours today, while rain and local showers—some accompanied by thunderstorms—are forecast in the afternoon in Bačka, Srem, western and southwestern Serbia, in the evening in central areas, and overnight in the rest of the country.
The highest temperature today will range from 15 to 20°C. Currently, the coldest location is Kopaonik at -1°C, while the warmest are Belgrade and Novi Sad at 14°C.
Temperatures are just slightly lower, at around 12°C, in Valjevo, Veliko Gradište, and Smederevska Palanka.
A yellow weather alert is in effect across most of Serbia today due to rain and strong winds, while only Belgrade, Šumadija, Pomoravlje, and eastern Serbia remain under a green alert.
A yellow alert means that the weather may potentially be dangerous—although the forecast phenomena are not unusual, caution is advised, especially for activities exposed to weather-related risks.
As stated, it is recommended to “continue monitoring information on expected meteorological conditions.”
Rain turning into snow
By the end of the day and overnight, rain will turn into snow in the mountainous areas of southwestern and southern Serbia. Winds will weaken and shift to northwesterly, accompanied by a drop in temperature.
On Friday and over the weekend, conditions will remain cloudy with rain and local showers, while mountainous areas will see snowfall and an increase in snow cover, with locally heavier precipitation expected.
On Sunday afternoon, precipitation will gradually cease, while from Monday, March 30, conditions will be partly cloudy and windy, with a chance of light rain, and snow in higher elevations.
Region already affected
A major weather change has already hit Croatia, with snow falling in Gorski Kotar and parts of northwestern Croatia, while strong winds are blowing along the coast.
This morning at 6 a.m., Civil Protection sent a warning message to citizens urging caution due to heavy snowfall, along with a link to monitor the situation, according to the Index portal.
The Hydrometeorological Institute of Republika Srpska has also issued a warning about a sudden change in weather, heavy precipitation, cooling, snow, and strong to gale-force winds.
Similar conditions are expected in Bosnia and Herzegovina, where the Federal Hydrometeorological Institute (FHMZ) has issued a warning for today due to strong winds across the country and intense precipitation in the Krajina region.
