After a brief spell of cooler weather, with daytime highs today ranging from 27°C to 31°C, temperatures will begin to rise significantly from tomorrow, August 19.

From Thursday, August 20, through Tuesday, August 25, Serbia is expected to experience a severe heatwave, with maximum temperatures of 35°C to 40°C. In central and southern Serbia, where it will be hottest, temperatures could locally reach around 42°C.

The State Hydrometeorological Institute of Serbia (RHMZ) has also issued a heatwave warning for Belgrade. From Thursday through Tuesday, August 20–25, maximum temperatures in the capital are expected to reach 35°C to 38°C.

A brief change in weather, accompanied by a drop in temperatures, occasional rain and moderate to strong northwesterly winds, will temporarily create more favorable weather conditions for firefighting across Serbia.

However, once the new heatwave sets in, conditions will deteriorate significantly, accompanied by southerly and southwesterly winds.

The wind will strengthen on Thursday, August 20, particularly in the Košava region and mountainous areas, and from Saturday, August 22, in other parts of Serbia as well.

In addition, the continuation of a period with a significant rainfall deficit will further contribute to the drying out of vegetation and increase the risk of wildfires starting and spreading rapidly.

Due to the forecast of extremely high temperatures, a red weather alert — the highest level of warning — will be in effect across almost all parts of Serbia as early as August 20.

Today, Serbia will experience temporary cloud cover with brief rain and local showers, with thunderstorms possible in some areas. The change will be accompanied by a drop in temperatures and moderate to strong northwesterly winds.

In the morning and early afternoon, the weather system will move from Vojvodina and western Serbia toward the central parts of the country, and by midday it will continue toward the south and east, while skies will gradually clear from the northwest.

The highest temperatures will range from 27°C to 31°C.

In the evening and overnight, variable cloudiness and isolated brief showers are possible in northern Serbia.
