Huge step forward; Aleksandar Vučić: "You have signed Memorandum establishing Saint Sava University" PHOTO
President of Serbia Aleksandar Vučić attended the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Serbian Orthodox Church and the Republic of Serbia, stating that Serbian education has never been separated from faith.
“You, Your Holiness, recently pointed out so beautifully the very essence of why we gathered here. You said that the education of the Serbian people bears the seal of Saint Sava. Our education has never been separated from faith. Let us simply say that autocephaly was his life’s work, and we have already said how great he was. On the foundations of his work, we are today building this house of knowledge,” said Aleksandar Vučić.
“Today you signed the Memorandum whose implementation will create the Saint Sava University,” Vučić added.
“The monastic cell and the classroom were once the same space. Education is not a privilege but a duty. The Resava School brought European thought into the Serbian language. The restoration of the Patriarchate of Peć gave a new impulse. Then came the Saint Sava Seminary in Belgrade, the seminary in Prizren… When the Great School was founded, members of the clergy were among its first teachers,” he said.
Vučić then spoke about the period when, as he said, there were attempts to separate the Church from the state.
“As far as education is concerned, over the past year we have gone through a true Golgotha. That is why today’s signing of the Memorandum is of crucial importance. As a state, we will help you realize those dreams, because we know that in doing so we are doing what is best for our children and for the future. They will be able to inherit patriotism — this is a huge step forward in the approach to education. May God forgive those who wanted to destroy their own country in order to seize power. I wish you success at the beginning of this endeavor, and I believe that together we all have great and difficult obligations ahead of us. Once again, Christ is Risen,” Vučić said.
After Aleksandar Vučić, Patriarch Porfirije also addressed those present.
“Aware of the significance of this moment, we are convinced that we are continuing a profound path of the Serbian Orthodox Church. Church universities represent one of the most important forms of that tradition. Numerous Roman Catholic higher education institutions operate around the world today. This is not a precedent, but rather a natural inclusion in a long-standing tradition. There are more than 600 Roman Catholic universities worldwide alone. From Bologna, where the very concept of the university originated, to Oxford, education developed in connection with church teaching,” the Patriarch said, continuing:
“The history of the Serbian Orthodox Church’s care for the enlightenment and education of the people is long and rich. A special place belongs to Visarion Pavlović. The establishment of Saint Sava University is of great importance for the republic, and I am grateful, Mr. President, that you have affirmed this. It is important for the future of society as a whole. In doing so, the Church is not distancing itself from society, but opening its doors. Therefore, I emphasize that this act is not directed against anyone, but represents an expression of responsibility and care. Especially because we understand studying not only as a process of acquiring knowledge, but also of acquiring virtue.”
