BELGRADE President Tomislav Nikolic talked on Friday with Karl Lamers, deputy chairman of the Defense Committee of the German parliament. Nikolic underscored that Germany "is the most serious partner and a country of essential importance for Serbia's progress along the EU path." Nikolic discusses EU, cooperation with German MP "Our wish is to become a part of the European family as soon as possible, and we have met all our obligations at a very fast pace," the Serbian president said, adding that citizens rightly expect a start date because all set conditions have been fulfilled. The Serbian president informed the German parliamentarian in detail about the problems facing the Serb community in Kosovo and Metohija, and the fact that Serbs voted in the local elections under very difficult and complicated circumstances, the president's press office announced. The president noted that Serbia is a leader in the region and one of the most important countries of Central and Eastern Europe, saying that it is very important that it be strengthened in economic terms before full EU membership, in which the role of Germany is very significant. On the other hand, there is a problem relating to the negative opinion that citizens of EU member states have concerning further EU enlargement due to corruption when using EU funds, as well as a consequence of the recession from which Western Europe is still recovering, the office cited the president as saying. "There has been a certain waning in Euro-enthusiasm in Serbia," the Serbian president said, "Citizens want a better living standard, but they are not so sure any longer that this could be achieved only by acceding to the EU," he added. Lamers said there is a clear political will in Germany that Serbia opens accession talks, but that there are still certain details to be discussed. The implementation of the Brussels agreement between Belgrade and Pristina is running according to the plan, and Serbia has done everything to stabilize the situation in Kosovo, the German MP said. Serbian Foreign Minister Ivan Mrkic, German Ambassador to Serbia Heinz Wilhelm and Advisor to the Serbian president Stanislava Pak-Stankovic also took part in the meeting. (Tanjug) Tanjug
