The Faculty for Islamic Studies students in Novi Pazar claim that they have not been allowed to compete for the Religion Ministry scholarships. The ministry denied the allegations. Muslim students, ministry in scholarships row Student representative Edin Djerlek said in front of several hundred protesters in Novi Pazar, in Serbia's southwestern Sandzak region, that students "want to live freely and with dignity, and to build their futures with equality for themselves, their families and community". He accused Religion Minister Bogoljub Sijakovic of preventing them to compete for the scholarships "just because they are Muslims and because they are at the Islamic Studies Faculty, and because they refuse to have brownnose relations towards the ruling regime”. “In the senseless war against the Islamic community in Serbia, this minister forgot that the ministry budget is not his private feud and that he cannot decide on his own who he will give the scholarships to. We expected that our faculty will have an equal status with the Orthodox School of Theology in Belgrade, by being completely funded from the state budget,” said Djerlek. He added that the scholarships "mean a lot" to the students, but that their "faith and dignity are more important”. The protesters wore green bands on their arms that read “Muslim” and had a moon and star on them to symbolically draw comparison to the persecution of Jews during the Holocaust who were forced to wear yellow arm bands. "The Holocaust is the result of anti-Semitism the first step of which was to mark people with yellow bands, the minister's Islamophobia is clearly leading us toward being marked with green bands, which will surely bring nobody any good," warned Djerlek.
