The European Commission (EC), in its regular annual report, has criticized Kosovo for the absence of a strategy to tackle organized crime. According to Pristina daily Koha Ditore, the report, to be published in November, states that Kosovo continues to be a territory of origin, transit and destination for organized crime. EC: Kosovo failing to tackle organized crime This is the EC’s first report since the unilateral declaration of independence on February 17. The EC notes that Kosovo has adopted a constitution in line with European standards, as well as other essential laws. “The Kosovo institutions are expected to consolidate the rule of law, the struggle against corruption and organized crime, as well as strengthen inter-ethnic dialogue,“ the report states. The violence in northern Kosovo is also mentioned, and that the parallel Serb institutions have hindered the spread of the Kosovo government’s authority throughout the whole province. It is added that European integration is one the main priorities for the Kosovo government, and that the authorities have approved an EU integration plan, but that reforms have been delayed because of the goings-on regarding the province’s status.
