Serbian politicians are aware of the fact that Kosovo will be independent, Jelko Kacin says. Beta news agency quoted the Slovenian deputy of the European Parliament and rapporteur for Serbia as saying Wednesday the negotiations about the future status are "merely their attempts to preserve their dignity." "Serbian leaders know Kosovo will be independent" "There is no politician in Serbia who is not aware of the fact that Kosovo will be independent. However, nobody has the courage to say this clearly to the Serbian public," Kacin said at a meeting of the foreign political committee of the European Parliament, at which the western Balkans was the topic. Thus, the negotiations about Kosovo are nothing more than "Serbian politicians trying to find a way out," while the Serbian public is "much more mature and aware that Kosovo is gone," Kacin said at the meeting, which was also attended by the European enlargement commissioner, Olli Rehn, the Slovenian agency STA reported. Kacin said the proposal for the consideration of a high degree of autonomy for Kosovo according to the model of the Aland Islands, which Belgrade put forward during the November 20 round of talks in Brussels, was an "exotic solution, completely unacceptable for conditions in the Balkans." In the case of Macedonia, which has been waiting for the talks on its accession to the EU for two years now, Kacin said that "consensus within Macedonia" was needed for progress in this field. "Now is a historic moment. Macedonian politicians should wake up if they want to accomplish anything during Slovenia's tenure as chair [of the EU]," he pointed out. Rehn, the European enlargement commissioner, said that he expected the politicians in Bosnia-Herzegovina to reach an agreement about the reform of the police on November 22, which is the last condition for signing a Stabilization and Association Agreement with the EU. He also said that solving the Kosovo status, "strengthening democratic forces in Serbia" and building state institutions in Bosnia, were the main challenges the EU is facing in the western Balkans.
