U.S. ambassador on Kosovo talks: It takes two to tango

"Serbia is working with Kosovo because they both want a European path and Merkel is not telling them to decide this or that, she is merely saying to sit and talk to each other. It is clear for Serbia and Kosovo as well that compromise is needed on both sides. This is what people must remember as it is the essence of negotiation".

The ambassador said he was pleased to see EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini was investing a lot of time in mediation so that the two sides could bring their stands closer.

Now there is just a bit work left to be done, noted Kirby.

He also "expressed his hope for getting a version of the resolution on Srebrenica which Serbia could accept," Tanjug quoted him as saying, and adding:

"This is why a version number four exists and who knows, maybe we get to version number five or six."

He noted that the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia decided this event was a genocide and that his government supported it, but pointed out that there were victims everywhere across the board - Serbs, Croats and Muslims.

"The idea is to try and understand what happened in the past, that there were many victims and how to move forward in reconciliation. This moving forward is what needs to be understood. The past must be accepted and learned from because nobody wants to repeat that kind of thing", stated Kirby.

"Srebrenica was particular but there were also Serbs killed earlier on in the same area. So let us move forward in reconciliation but also understand that there was a terrible event in Srebrenica", Kirby said for Tanjug.
