BELGRADE EU Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fule has called on Serbian politicians to implement the Brussels agreement and continue reforms. He said he was convinced that with the politicians’ efforts, Serbia would get a date for the beginning of the EU accession negotiations in June. Serbian politicians urged to implement Brussels agreement Fule noted that the Brussels agreement was a big step forward in relations between Belgrade and Pristina and that it now needed to be implemented. When asked to comment on information that Germany believed that the Brussels agreement was not enough to grant Serbia a date for the start of the EU talks, the EU enlargement commissioner said that EU member states agreed that a priority was a “sustainable and visible progress in relations with Kosovo”. He added that the European Commission had recommended the member states based on the progress that had been made, to open the negotiations with Serbia, stressing that the “Brussels agreement was reached so it could be implemented, not so it could remain on paper”. Fule said that the Serbian politicians needed to be “courageous” and expressed hope that the EU member states would be able to follow the EC’s recommendation and give Serbia a date for the beginning of the EU accession talks in June. He believes that the date would be the strongest signal when it came to Serbia’s European future and the EU membership and that it would be an important element that would attract investors.
