UNMIK draws "red lines" for northern Kosovo
2 December 2007 | 11:32 | Source: FoNet, Tanjug
KOSOVSKA MITROVICA -- An UNMIK spokesman says there are three "red lines" in northern Kosovo that "cannot be crossed".

Alexander Ivanko said Saturday the first is that there can be no violence, the second that contacts with UNMIK representatives cannot be severed, and the third is that there can be no parallel security forces in northern Kosovo.

He was speaking for Kosovska Mitrovica Kontakt Plus radio when he said there were some 200 international policemen stationed in northern Kosovo and that UNMIK has "action plans" for this region.

Ivanko also expressed hope that the talks with the local government representatives would continue.

When asked about the manner in which they intend to integrate the north into the Kosovo system, the UNMIK spokesman said the "red lines", if obeyed, ought to provide the basis for "continued cooperation in search of a solution."

"I think that the end result will be deployment of a new EU mission here" Ivanko told the radio.
