It's apparent from reading all of the comments here, that there is little hope for peace in Kosovo in the foreseeable future. Instead of making comments such as these...

"northern Kosovo is something your snake-brained ‘president’ can only dream of... "

"For those that like Russians to be their invaders, good luck. Your children will hate you for life."

...you should be debating the issues discussed in the article. Why not allow Northern Kosovo to split since it is predominately Serbian? Isn't that the reasoning behind the split of Kosovo from Serbia? There is too much reliance on legends and not enough on reason when making these decisions.

Implementation of the Ahtisaari plan is a requirement for the recognition of Kosovo's independence. Mistreating the Serbian minority will not be tolerated by the EU or US. Everyone needs to understand that. If one thinks it is a given that US recognition is not revocable, one should remember that Taiwan was recognized as the legitimate China before the US withdrew recognition and set up relations with mainland China. Taiwan was expelled from the UN and China took its seat. Minority rights will be very important and if the Albanian majority doesn't want to respect those rights, maybe other options to protect those rights will present themselves at later times. Kosovo will not be solved within the next 10, 20 or even 50 years. I'm sure that this animosity will cause more conflicts.

Kosovo should focus on the future. Sediju and Ceku talked about good neighborly relations which will be important. Serbia will likely be in the EU before Kosovo since there is no economy in Kosovo, the infrastructure is degraded and standards that must be met to enter the EU are far from being achieved. The EU mission in Kosovo doesn't guarantee automatic admission to the EU. Look at Bosnia as the example. They are still without an SAA while NATO and the EU have been there since '95. Also, look at history. Greece is threatening to block Macedonia's admission into the EU and NATO over a name. If you don't have those good neighborly relations with Serbia, I am 99.9% sure that Serbia will block Kosovo's admission to the EU.

Adrian Gashi, Kosovo and Preshevo Valley are two separate issues. Kosovo is the subject of this debate. Preshevo Valley is not part of Kosovo. Despite the large Albanian population, it is not subject to partition like Kosovo.

Afrim Hoxha, the 90 "marines" are actually US Army National Guard soldiers. Don't trust the local papers. The rumor of Marines showing up to secure your independence has been around for years. We have better uses for them than to stick them in Kosovo.

Have'nt you people noticed how the Albanians keep changing their independance date. First it sas December 10 and now it's somewhere in mid January. You know why that's happening, because the Albanians are not sure if the U.S. will support them, there is even a line America cannot cross. From what I can see, there are chances that America will betray Albania just like they betrayed Iraq.
(Vucina, 2 December 2007 17:54)

Vucina,

Albanians always said it will be after 10th of Dec and with USA & EU agreement. It is a question of when and not if, for this historical declaration of Kosova's Independent.

I love to see albanians preaching about hypocrisy.
Is it not hypocrisy to claim
injustice towards albanians while destroying churches, kiling Serbs and taking land? Is it it hypocrisy to demand independence from Serbia but not wanting to give north Kosovo independence from the vast south? And my favorite claiming you deserve Kosovo and the Serbs lost any control when abusing albanians the same goes for albanians then.Look you do not have full control of Kosovo and already you are talking about Presevo.Everything you accuse Serbs of you are 10 times as guilty for so stop with the hypocrisy stuff. The north of Kosovo must remain Serbian until we come back for the rest since it is illegal under every international law to take land and use terrorism to do so.

Adrian Gashi

pre 16 godina

There is an utter hypocrisy in the Serbian attitudes. They want to partition Kosova, yet they pretend to uphold UN res 1244 and Intl Law. They want to take north of Mitrovica, yet they don't want to give Presheva Valley that has an Albanian majority. Sorry is not going to happen. Intl community sees thru this and has no reason to give everything to the Serbs and leave the other side empty handed. That's why Nato is there to ensure that Kosova becomes independent with its current borders. That is the gist of these "red lines". As things stand, Kosova will become independent and North of Kosova will not be joining Serbia. You can keep Presheva Valley. When you are serious about a compromise, you know where to call.

The problem with the majority of the Kosovo Albanians is that they do not understand the concept of tolerance and compromise. Most Serbs will be happy to get rid of almost two million people they have nothing in common with. Financially Serbia will also be better off. It will be good when the Northern part of Kosovo will join Serbia (and the Presevo Valley will stay Serbian and maybe those people should move to Kosovo). There will be enough land left for the Kosovo Albanians and please join Albania so all of you have to give up your Serbian passports (you are not worth them) and have the decency to respect Orthodox Christian monuments (but I seriously doubt that as history has shown many times). Remember a few things. One day Kosovo will be Serbian again, Kosovo as an independent state will be a disaster, hopefully if there is justice Kosovo and Western politicians plus NATO will appear in The Hague on charges of ethnic cleansing of Kosovo Serbs, and you people will soon realize that life in Yugoslavia was not that bad. There are still enough people who believe in law and so I still have to see that Kosovo will become independent (you can declare as much as you want). No single Serb can put even 1% trust in NATO and I know that Serbs will have the willingness to defend themselves. I also wonder whether or not the UN will take care of Serbian refugees (probably not).

For those that like to play with international law, this is UNMIK speaking, meaning United Nations Mission In Kosova, so why do you even have a problem with that?

For those that like Russians to be their invaders, good luck. Your children will hate you for life. Every slavic nation in their history, have seen a real progress only when they aligned with the West, far away from Russian influence. Anyway, if that's your choice, once again good luck. It only means more Western money for the rest of us.

the "red line" goes along side the border dividing Kosovo and Serbia.
This acording to the Contact Group, serbian governament, Kosovar governament, EU, UN., considering Contact Groups principels, EU and UN statements and resolutions, serbian govermend, deployment of ther police, armed forces etc.
This line is drawn this way
UNMIK is just reminding everybody of this fact.

Mike

Well these "red lines" are pretty self-evident:

1. "there can be no violence", - no problem, so long as violence is not visited upon the Serbs.

2. "contacts with UNMIK representatives cannot be severed" - no problem so long as UNMIK and later EUMIK institutions are both fair and objective in what will undoubtedly be an executive position in government.

3. "there can be no parallel security forces in northern Kosovo" - again, no problem, provided Serbs are given the ability to secure their own areas and Albanians are given the ability to secure theirs.

It's not the 5-7% Serbs who have to play fair in order to ensure the peace, it's the 90+% Albanian population, and even more importantly the interantional bodies that are acting as objective arbiters.

This man is either dementic or do not understand the fact that Serbs in Northern Kosovo are totally independent from South. How he think to integrate Serbs living in Kosovo into Kosovo society. There is no even theoretical chance. Serbs in Kosovo will boycotte Kosovo institutions and will be fully supported from Belgrade by all means. Of course, there is no need for violence. Everything can be done in peaceful manner, just boycoting everything that comes from South Kosovo. Serbs in North will be helped financially as they are now. Integration of the Serbian community into Kosovo institutions led by Albanians cen be done only by force. If International community is ready to apply force against Serbs or let Albanians apply force while entering North then Serbian Army will intervene. It would be smart to let Serbs live their lives as it suits them best then to use any kind of force in order to integrate them into Albanian criminal society. Don't forget that Serbs have the same right on selfdetermination and they already expressed thier opinion by boycotting the elections.

Commandment X: Thou shalt not covet anything that belongs to thy neighbor

The same guiding principles can be found not only in the Bible (The Holy Book of Christians) but also in the Koran (The Holy Book of Moslems), The Bhagavad-Gita (The Holy Book of Hindu) etc.

The more important, actually crucial message of all three a.m. holy books is: LOVE THY NEIGHBOUR! I guess the more suitable message for Kosova(o) and Serbia is (at least for the time being): LIVE IN HARMONY WITH THY NEIGHBOUR.

I’m grieved to read some intolerant (sometimes even warmongering) comments coming from the posters/commentators from both camps (Albanian and Serbian) such as (not verbatim):

a. Kosova(o) is Serbia and if you Albanians do not accept is get lost (Serb camp) or
b. Kosova(o) is Albanian and if you Serbs can not accept is get lost (Albanian camp)

In addition:
I’m encouraged by the recent comments of Serbia’s president, Mr Tadic: “Serbia will not use military force if Kosova(o) declares the independence”, but I’m very worried about the behaviour of Serbia’s prime minister, Mr Kostunica, who offers Kosova(o) a wide autonomy, but when it comes to having dinner with Albanians during the negotiations in Baden/Austria the he simply skips it. In addition, Mr Kostunica wants to territorially integrate Kosova(o) into Serbia but he has no intention of integrating Albanians into the Serbian society.

The same is with Albanians. They are granting the Serbs in Kosova(o) a lots of rights under Atisari’s plan but when it comes to executing them in practice they fail. Albanians simply do not do enough to make Serbs feel safe in Kosova(o) let alone make the Serbs feel comfortable.

I guess both, the Serbs and Albanians, have to learn a lot before they understand the basic massage of all three a.m. holy books. My advice to them is: LEARN IT QUICKLY BECAUSE YOU HAVE NOT MUCH TIME LEFT. The patience of the international community is wearing thin by the second!

Can there be parallel security forces in the southern part of Kosovo?
Strange statement - if true.

don´t worry Afrim...

those 90 G.I´s are only symbolic...and even they are much more needed in Iraq... :)

northern Kosovo is something your snake-brained "president" can only dream of...
and the south will certainly not be independent... you still believe that, but... you will see what future brings.

Afrim Hoxha, the troop are their to protect the Serbs from Albanian attacks to push the last Serbian strong hold in Kosovo. One thing is for sure, that neither side will get every thing they want. We do not want independence, you do not want autonomy & all thats left is partition. Thats going to be the compromise solution. North to us & the vast south to you. You end up with more and we still have a chunk of our land. In the end I think that solution will be stuffed down both our throtes.

the "red line" goes along side the border dividing Kosovo and Serbia.
Posters here may have different ideas, why not.

The fact remains that albanians are not in control of anything. This has been a cowardly american project from the start. So whatever americans say, they must bow their head.

KS REPUBLIC- What is this nonsense about the legality of Northern Kosovo seceding? Not to worried about the legality of Albanians declaring independence are you.
Are you going to be outraged by Serbs declaring independence in in the North, AND the South? Are you going to be outraged when Serbia exercises its right to send in a few hundred troops to this areas (as per res. 1244). Troops bolstered by Russian forces?
This situation is FAR from over.

Have'nt you people noticed how the Albanians keep changing their independance date. First it sas December 10 and now it's somewhere in mid January. You know why that's happening, because the Albanians are not sure if the U.S. will support them, there is even a line America cannot cross. From what I can see, there are chances that America will betray Albania just like they betrayed Iraq.

so now we just got to find the one serb that cares what pristina or unmik says.

for me, this one guy (should he be found) is the red line.

i would call the handfull of serbs that where "voting" in the so-called "elections" by phone, at least one of them should care!

Vucina,

Albanians always said it will be after 10th of Dec and with USA & EU agreement. It is a question of when and not if, for this historical declaration of Kosova's Independent.

90 American Marines are already there in the north. The presence of Americans there is good enough to scare any serbian decision maker to think of sending troops or any sort of that in the northern part of Kosova.
Also, few hundred german troops are being sent there also.
Therefore the dreams of Kostunica and his alikes for grabbing the northern part of Kosova are stopped and engulfed by Americans.
Thanks.
(Afrim Hoxha, 2 December 2007 11:58)

Mr Hoxha that 90 US Army not MARINES yes that is enough marines to stop any invasion if it came but there will be no invasion that KFOR unit i to ensure there is not a mass migration to North of the ibar to try and become the majority. I am surprised Afrim you would mention Marines they are all in Iraq Not Kosovo.
