THE HAGUE Persons from Serbia convicted by the Hague Tribunal "currently cannot serve their sentences in Serbia", The Hague based UN war crimes court has confirmed. However, officials can appeal once again to the UN secretary-general to make this possible, Hague spokeswoman Magdalena Spalinska told Tanjug on Wednesday. "Hague sentences cannot be served in Serbia" Serbia has addressed the UN several times with such a request, but the situation right now is that Hague convicts cannot serve sentences in countries of the former Yugoslavia, said Spalinska. She said this was in line with a decision of the UN secretary-general from 1993, when the Tribunal was established. The Secretary-General said at the time that due to the specific nature of the crimes and the international nature of the court, sentences must be served outside of the former Yugoslavia, she said, adding this remains the official position of the UN and the Hague itself. Convicts do not serve their sentences at the Tribunal's detention facility, but outside of the Netherlands, in one of the countries which have signed an agreement with the court. The Hague has signed agreements on enforcement of sentences with 17 countries - Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Germany, ritain, France, Portugal, Estonia, Belgium, Austria, Italy, Spain, Poland, Ukraine, Slovakia and Albania. The last four countries have yet to receive any Hague convicts. Tanjug
