Del Ponte: Serbia’s painful inability
The cause of this ”painful inability” to face the heritage from the recent past, along with many other problems, lies in “the tremendous power of the civilian and military intelligence services and the fear they spread”.Just as Croatia did 18 months ago, ”Serbia is now lobbying in European capitals to approach the EU without first extraditing Karadžić and Mladić”, Carla Del Ponte said during her lecture in Tallinn.
”However, the Croatian case demonstrates that if the EU sticks to it principles, it can achieve a lot”, Del Ponte said.
The Bosnian war finished eleven years ago, Milošević’s regime was overthrown six years ago. Despite all this, “no Serbian government dared accept the fact the former Yugoslav and Serbian governments played a key role in the wars where heinous crimes where committed”, the Hague Tribunal Chief Prosecutor Carla Del Ponte concluded.
