Two Zemun Clan members acquitted by Serbian court

The members of the Zemun Clan criminal gang were on trial charged with a number of murders and attempted murders.

Bojovic and Milisavljevic were tried in absentia because they are currently detained in Spain on charges brought by Spanish judicial authorities.

The court ruled a lack of evidence in the case against Bojovic, saying that the indictment against him relied entirely on the statements given by Kalinic and Simovic.

The court also found there was no evidence to prove that Bojovic took over as the head of the Zemun Clan after its leader, Dusan Spasojevic, died in a clash with the police in 2003.

In its closing argument, the prosecution sought a maximum penalty of 30 to 40 years in prison for Bojovic, accusing him of committing several murders and attempted murders in 2004, while his defense argued that he should be acquitted.

The prosecution sought the same punishment for the Zemun Clan members who were fugitives in 2004 - Milisavljevic, Kalinic, and Simovic.

Bojovic and others were indicted for the murder of Branko Jeftovic aka Jorga and the attempted murder of Andrija Draskovic and Zoran Nedovic aka Sok, as well as for the murder of their bodyguards who died during the attempt.

At the start of the trial in 2010, Kalinic admitted to killing Jeftovic and accused Bojovic of the criminal acts he was charged with, and of other murders that were not included in the indictment.

In 2014, a Spanish court found that Bojovic was not guilty of the murder of Milan Jurisic aka Jure in Madrid in 2009 - something that Kalinic accused him of.

In their statements before the court in Spain, Bojovic and Milisavljevic said Kalinic murdered Jurisic, and accused him of committing other crimes.
