Court charges Ukrainian who attempted plane hijacking

The charges against him have not been specified.

The crime of hijacking an aircraft carries a penalty of up to 20 years in prison in Turkey, the news agency noted in its report.

Anti-terrorist police interrogated Kozlov after he was taken into custody on Friday after two Turkish F-16 jets forced the airliner down.

AFP said that Kozlov, reported by one official in Kiev as being "in an advanced state of drunkenness," was found to be carrying no weapons, but "brandished what he said was a detonator as he tried gaining access to the cockpit."

Ukrainian media reported on Saturday that the suspect "demanded the release of all demonstrators in Kiev," and that it was possible he was an opposition activist.

AP cited Turkey's NTV outlet's report, where an unnamed passenger on the plane said that Kozlov wanted "freedom for prisoners in Ukraine, and for former PM Yulia Tymoshenko."
