DAMASCUS The rebel Free Syrian Army (FSA) has accused Russia "of not telling the truth" when it claims that the rebels used the nerve gas sarin in their attacks. Luay Mukdad, political and media coordinator of the FSA, said that the insurgents "do not have such weapons," accusing Russia of trying to protect the Syrian president and long-time ally of Bashar al-Assad with allegations that chemical weapons were used by the rebels. Syria: Rebels say they did not use chemical weapons This FSA representative also accused the government forces of using the gas, saying that several countries, "the U.S., Britain, and France among them," have proof of this. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated on Wednesday that experts from his country in March visited the scene of attacks in Khan al-Asali, near Aleppo, in northern Syria, where they collected the evidence firsthand. The United Nations rejected the Russian allegations that the rebels used chemical weapons, and France reiterated the demand that Syria allow UN inspectors access to all areas where chemical weapons were allegedly used. Russia, meanwhile, rejects claims of the U.S. and some other western countries that their intelligence services collected evidence that the regime in Damascus "to a limited extent uses chemical weapons." Syria dmits that such weapons are at its disposal, but insists that they would never be used in civil conflicts on its soil. A scene from the war-torn Syria (Beta/AP, file) Tanjug
