Ukraine's Court of Cassation has upheld the ruling againt former PM Yulia Tymoshenko, which sent her to jail for seven years on charges of abuse of power.

KIEV Ukraine's Court of Cassation has upheld the ruling againt former PM Yulia Tymoshenko, which sent her to jail for seven years on charges of abuse of power. "The panel concluded that Tymoshenko's appeal can not be satisfied," said the president of the court, Oleksandr Elfimov. Ukraine: Tymoshenko verdict confirmed Tymoshenko, who has been in prison for a year, was sentenced in October 2011. The abuse of power charge related to her signing a damaging contract on deliveries of Russian natural gas to Ukraine. Some one hundred supporters of the former prime minister protested this morning in front of the courthouse in Kiev, holding banners with messages of support for Tymoshenko and demanding "an end to political repression." Yulia Tymoshenko is challenging the verdict and believes that she is the victim of political vendetta of President Viktor Yanukovych. After the ruling against her was confirmed in December 2011, Tymoshenko filed an appeal to the Court of Cassation. She also turned to the European Court of Human Rights, which on Tuesday started to deliberate the case. Tymoshenko's case has caused a serious crisis in relations between Kiev and western countries.
