Vladimir Putin was sworn in as Russia’s president in Kremlin on Monday. He was sworn in with his right hand placed on a red-bound copy of the Russian Constitution in the presence of the Constitutional Court president and both parliament houses speakers. Putin sworn in as Russia’s president Former President Dmitry Medvedev handed him over Russia’s nuclear suitcase immediately after the inauguration. The ceremony, which was covered live by state TV stations, was attended by around 3,000 guests, MPs, Constitutional Court judges, representatives of the diplomatic corps, Russian government members, federal authorities’ representatives, religious leaders, public figures, journalists and businessmen. Medvedev was the first to address the guests and said that “he openly and honestly” performed his duty, adding that he was convinced that Putin would continue the reforms so Russia would be a strong, democratic state. “We are entering a new stage of national development,” 59-year-old Putin said after the inauguration. “The life of future generations, the historical prospects of our state and our nation, today depend on us, on our efforts at saving people and supporting Russian families, our persistence in managing vast Russian territories from the Baltic to the Pacific Ocean, our ability to become leaders and the centre of gravity for the entire Eurasia,” he noted. This is Putin’s third term in office. He won presidential elections two times in a row and served as the Russian president from 2000 until 2008. The presidential mandate was extended to six years in late 2009 at Medvedev’s proposal, which was considered to be a personal favor to Putin. It is expected that Putin will nominate Medvedev for the next PM. The voting should be held on May 8.
