U.S. software maker Microsoft has announced that it would take over VOIP service company Skype for USD 8.5bn. The cash deal is the company's "biggest ever", said reports. Microsoft to pay USD 8.5bn for Skype Microsoft is buying Skype from a group of investors led by Silver Lake private investment fund. Facebook and Google reportedly also showed interest, but offered "about half" of the Microsoft figure. Skype, which claims to have over 650 million users, reported net losses of some USD 7mn in 2010. According to reports, Microsoft would continue to support Skype on other platforms, which currently include Linux-based operating systems such as Google's Android, and Apple's phones and tablets.
