Microsoft to pay USD 8.5bn for Skype

U.S. software maker Microsoft has announced that it would take over VOIP service company Skype for USD 8.5bn.

Just so that the people who use Skype know, from now on all you Skype calls can and likely will be monitored. This is not some fear mongering statement, but a direct result of Skype being owned by Microsoft.

Microsoft, as a US company, has to abide by the Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act (CALEA). Formerly run from Lithuania, Skype did not need (but might have had) such a surveillance back door.

Being under surveillance by your own country's government is one, being tapped by a foreign one (especially the US, where you don't have any rights) yet quite another. Just know who/what you are dealing with!
