Hundreds of people protested in Bishkek and Osh against plans to deploy the OSCE police monitors in southern Kyrgyzstan. Reports said that protesters expressed their fear the "Kosovo scenario would repeat there". Kyrgyzstanis "don't want another Kosovo" The protest was held in front of the parliament building in Bishkek where PM’s cabinet currently located. “We are against such measures because they can lead to a partition of the country. Southern areas of Kyrgyzstan could follow the Kosovo scenario,” one of the protesters said. Most of the participants in the rally were members of youth organization the People of Kyrgyzstan Civil Movement. Many of them were carrying placards saying “No to OSCE police”, and “We won’t allow another Kosovo in Kyrgyzstan”. A similar rally was held in the second largest city of Osh where several hundred people gathered. The OSCE reached an agreement last week to deploy 50 unarmed police advisers in order to help the republic's law enforcement agencies in easing inter-ethnic tensions between the majority Kyrgyz and minority Uzbek population. Over 300 people were killed and some 2,000 sustained injuries in mass disorders which hit the south of the country in June this year, while 400,000 were forced to leave their homes. The tensions are not easing up as there are rumors that police are singling out ethnic Uzbeks in the investigation of the violence. Those who oppose the OSCE mission think that the local authorities are capable of handling any kind of disturbances.
