Thousands of Israelis have shown their solidarity with the gay community in Tel Aviv. A week ago a masked gunman burst into a gay youth centre and sprayed the room with bullets. He killed a 26-year-old man and a 16-year-old girl and injured thirteen others. Israelis mark gay shooting with rally of support The incident shocked the country, particularly as it had happened in cosmopolitan Tel Aviv. One woman said: “We are mourning this atrocious murder that took place on Saturday night, so we are here with all the gay people and the people who support them.” Among the crowds were many parents to gay children, some showing their support publicly for the first time. Israel’s President Shimon Peres led political leaders in condemning the killings – so far the gunman has not been caught. Although Tel Aviv has a bustling gay seen, open homosexuality is shunned and even met with violence in more conservative and orthodox areas of Israel.
