BELGRADE A wildfire has been raging on the Crni Vrh mountain peak near Prijepolje, in southwestern Serbia, for 12 straight days. The fire, which has already spread to some 160 hectares of undergrowth, was during the night moving in the direction of a 300-hectare area covered with pine wood. Wildfire in southwestern Serbia burning for 12 days The region has been reporting unseasonably hot weather, with temperatures reaching 34 degrees centigrade. Dragan Doncevski of the MUP Sector for Emergency Situations told B92 on Thursday morning that the situation "had improved", but that the fire had not been contained. He said the firefighters were especially struggling to put out the blaze on a steep cliff and were working both on the ground and from the air. "We are trying to direct the fire toward an inaccessible area which is a natural barrier, where it would extinguish by itself. In other words, we are continuing to put out the fire with 92 firefighters, 22 firefighting trucks, and 15 Srbijasume (state-run forest management company) workers, who have been of great assistance." MUP Sector for Emergency Situations officer Goran Posrkusa explained that the Crni Vrh fire, which broke out on April 21, was particularly problematic because it was burning in some areas which could not be physically accessed by the firefighters - in Uvac and Lim canyons.
