The authorities say that 22 people have died so far in the cold snap that has been gripped Serbia for more than two weeks. A 65-year-old man in a village in northern Serbia has been confirmed as the latest victim of freezing, while two people are still listed as missing. Another victim of cold weather in Serbia Wednesday was the first day since late January that the temperatures briefly rose above zero degrees centigrade in daytime in some parts of the country. But snowstorms hit again on Thursday, with heavy precipitation reported in Sjenica, southwestern Serbia. Local roads that were previously cleared of snow are again impassable, resulting in nearly 15,000 residents being cut off from the world today. Similar problems were reported from Surdulica and Vladicin Han in southern Serbia. Earlier on Thursday, MUP Emergency Situations Sector chief Predrag Maric said that his teams so far rescued 275 people whose lives were at risk from the weather. Maric said that the situation had improved in all municipalities, and that the government measures to send additional mechanization to help clear the snow in some areas had yielded results. A state of emergency is still in force in Serbia. Although there has been improvement regarding the stability of the electrical grid - which operates on the brink of its capabilities, however, without power cuts - the authorities have appealed on the citizens to continue to cut down on their electricity consumption.
