Miljan Miljanić, the legendary coach of Belgrade's football club Crvena Zvezda (Red Star) died in Belgrade on Friday, at the age of 81.

Miljan Miljanic, the legendary coach of Belgrade's football club Crvena Zvezda (Red Star) died in Belgrade on Friday, at the age of 81. Miljanic was former Yugoslav national football team coach and an honorary president of the Football Association of Serbia (FSS). Yugoslav football legend Miljanic dies He was born in Bitolj, the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, to a family hailing from Montenegro. As the coach of Crvena Zvezda, Miljanic won ten trophies and his arrival to the post is considered to be the key moment in the history of Serbia's most successful football club. He led Zvezda for eight consecutive seasons and brought the club to top European football levels. Numerous successes, victories and trophies followed with the new generation of players he trained, who were headed by probably the best Yugoslav footballer of all time, Dragan Dzajic. Leaving Crvena Zvezda in 1974, he took over Real Madrid the same year, winning double crown in Spain with the team with which he stayed until 1977. Five years later, he joined Valencia CF as coach. He also headed the Yugoslav national team in two world cups: in Germany in 1974 and in Spain in 1982. He is equally known as the all-powerful president of the Football Association of Yugoslavia (FSJ), a post he occupied for 20 years before retiring in 2001. Due to the exceptional merits for the development of football in the country, he was named an honorary lifetime president of the FSJ the same year. He was awarded the Order of Bravery, Order of Nemanja, Second Class and the FIFA Order of Merit, the highest honor awarded by FIFA to people considered to have made a significant contribution to football.
