The medieval Serbian Orthodox monastery of Studenica is located some 6 kilometers from the fire and is for the time being safe. This is the fourth wildfire in the area in the past two weeks. More than 100 hectares of wood were previously destroyed in the blaze. Firefighters were also struggling today to contain the flames in the Djerdap National Park in eastern Serbia, where some 50 hectares of beech forest and undergrowth are burning. The fire broke out around noon, while late last night Deputy MUP Director Branislav Mitrovic said it was contained, but added it would be difficult to entirely put out because the area is difficult to access. Mitrovic also said he hoped firefighting aircraft would join the effort in Djerdap during Thursday.
