According to organizers of a protest of raspberry farmers in western Serbia, police have been preventing them from blocking the Belgrade-Bar railways. This was heard today from Association of Raspberry Producers President Dobrivoje Radovic. Police preventing blocking of major railway According to him, police were preventing the farmers from reaching the railway, which they intended to block this afternoon. Radovic also said that the organization's secretary Aleksandar Martinovic was detained on Wednesday, but that farmers from several towns in western Serbia were "still arriving in Pozega". No incidents were reported. Radovic said the Pozega-Valjevo and Uzice-Bajina Basta roads were blocked. The reason for the protest, he said, was "the revolt felt by the farmers caused by the behavior of the Ministry of Agriculture". He also announced "more radical protests", without providing any further details. Association's representatives and those from the ministry met in Belgrade last night but failed to agree both on a single price for all raspberries produced in Serbia, and on subsidies for the export of the fruit. The farmers want the price to go from the current RSD 85-95 to RSD 100, and to be given subsidies of RSD 26 per kilogram. The protest started on September 11, when police prevented the farmers from reaching Belgrade in their tractors. Ministry of Agriculture official Milos Milovanovic said last night the farmers' demands regarding the subsidies was unrealistic and that they would not be accepted. Meanwhile in the town of Uzice, police spokesman Dragan Acimovic said that there were "no indications the raspberry farmers would block the Belgrade-Bar railway near Pozega". Asked whether police were preventing them from approaching the railway line, he said the officers were "doing their job". Acimovic also confirmed that the protesters used tractors and cars to block the Uzice-Bajina Basta and Pozega Kosjeric roads, but said drivers were using alternative roads.
