Serbia's Commissioner for Equality Nevena Petrusic expressed concern on Thursday over the resurgence of hate speech at public gatherings and in the media. She said this was despite the fact that Serbia now has a good normative framework for protection against discrimination. Commissioner concerned by incidents Petrusic told Tanjug that everyone should be concerned about this, especially when there are incidents such as the recent attack on a Roma boy in downtown Belgrade. Any form of hate, intolerance or violence towards someone just because they are Roma creates an image that we need to change. I would like all of us to do everything we can to prevent such incidents, Petrusic said. According to her, school children should be taught about tolerance, non-violence and understanding differences through practical examples. Petrusic pointed out that this is the road to a tolerant and democratic society, which will respect differences and whose younger generations will know that differences make one richer. She noted that Serbia today has the legal instruments to prevent discrimination and that they should be used. "The key is for citizens to not tolerate discrimination but to report it, because every successfully completed case resulting from their complaints helps build a more tolerant and open society which respects differences," Petrusic said.
