A woman from Zajecar has left her house in her will to victims of domestic violence, so the town will once again have a “safe house”, Vecernje Novosti reports. The safe house in Zajecar, which was closed six months ago, was the only refuge for women who fell victim to domestic violence from Serbia's easter region of Timocka Krajina. Woman leaves house to victims of domestic violence The reason the safe house was closed was expensive renting, the daily writes. Since the safe house in Zajecar was opened in 2007, more than 250 women and children from the entire Timocka Krajina took refuge there, says Director of the Social Work Center Mirjana Andrijasevic. “We were witnesses of the most brutal cases of domestic violence and several times we ourselves were targets of violent husbands,” she explained. “A fellow citizen, who died recently, left us her house in her will and stressed that it could be used ‘for protection of women and children’,” Andrijasevic pointed out. “Our fellow citizen’s wish was also not to reveal her name,” she added. The house is in excellent condition, writes the newspaper. It has about 100 square meters and a yard surrounded by high fences to protect it. The location is kept secret bearing in mind that women who take refuge in safe houses are often attacked by their violent partners. Andrijasevic pointed out that the safe house in Zajecar will be opened in the next few days, as soon as all formalities regarding the signing over of ownership to the Social Work Center have been finished.
