Serbian peacekeepers in Haiti are unharmed in the wake of a massive earthquake that struck near the capital of Port-au-Prince, MUP said. Serbian police (MUP) announced in Belgrade today that the information they have shows that all five of their members, deployed with the UN in Haiti, are safe. Meanwhile, VOA reports that scientists with the U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake struck about ten kilometers from Port-au-Prince on Tuesday afternoon. The initial quake registered at magnitude seven on the Richter Scale and was followed by several other shocks, including one that measured 5.9. Witnesses said a hospital in the capital collapsed, a luxury hotel in Petionville had sustained major damage and many other buildings were destroyed. The United Nations said there was serious damage to the headquarters of its mission in Haiti, and a large number of staff were unaccounted for.
