Workers of two privatized companies in Kursumlija, in southern Serbian, have continued blocking the Nis-Pristina regional road on Tuesday. Workers of the Kopaonik and 7. Jul companies spent the night in tents set up on the road. Protesters block Nis-Pristina road They are calling for the linking of their period of employment, the payment of remaining wages and the restarting of production in several factories owned by the Kopaonik company. The workers set up camp fires, as well as tables and benches on the road next to the tents. Representatives of private companies from Kursumlija brought them food and beverages. The workers will not move from the road until the Serbian government agrees to fulfill their demands. Since there are no by-pass routes for this part of the road, lines of vehicles have been stranded up several kilometers in both directions. Several dozen police officers are presents, securing the rally, which has been incident-free thus far. Many private companies from Kursumlija showed their support for the workers, as well as the local self-administration in the town. The road is being blocked by some 1,000 workers. Workers from the two factories blocked the work of the local self-administration last summer after which state government officials promised that their demands would be fulfilled. The Economy Ministry stated that ministry officials talked to officials of the Kopaonik company, but did not make any promises regarding their demands.
