The fist dosages of the swine flu vaccine have arrived in Serbia. Vaccination will begin in two weeks, once the vaccine has been tested. Swine flu vaccine arrives in Serbia The first shipment of 140,000 vaccines sent by the Novartis company has arrived and samples will be given to the Medicines Agency, according to the Jugohemija company, which imported the vaccines. Member of the working group for monitoring the flu, Branislav Tiodorovic, told B92 that the vaccine will be distributed throughout the territory of Serbia once a positive certificate is given by the agency. “The Medicines Agency will do this by procedures agreed on with the European Medicines Agency, but the process will be faster because they are not working with an unknown, uncertified, or unregistered vaccine,” Tiodorovic said. “That is why we believe that we will be able to start the vaccination in between December 10-15,” he said. Jugohemija stated that it would do everything it can to speed up the process. The company will also make sure that the shipments are as large as possible, so that all the dosages will arrive to Serbia quickly. Tiodorovic said that even though the agreement signed states that the next shipment will be made after December 15, the working group will try to get another 500,000 doses earlier, so that the first 640,000 can be used to vaccinate the priority groups of people as soon as possible,” Tiodorovic said. “That means young children, chronic patients and pregnant women. We will also start vaccinating health workers and public service workers,” he said. Epidemiologist Predrag Kon said that the decision whether to be vaccinated or not will be up to the citizens, stating that the risk of serious illnesses caused by the swine flu are one hundred times higher without vaccination. He said that the risks of negative reactions to the vaccine is very small, adding that one in every million people will have an unwanted reaction. (Beta)
