The opening of the faculty was financed by the American Agency for International Development. It is expected that similar departments will be opened in Bujanovac and Presevo. “The opening of these departments in Medvedja is a strategic step in stepping up the development of the municipality, which is one of the most underdeveloped in the south of Serbia,” Cvetkovic said. He said that new prospects were being opened up for students to learn and be educated to European standards, and to live and work in their community. Cvetkovic reiterated that Albanians made up one-quarter of the population in the municipality and that the opening of the faculty was a major step towards solving problems in Medvedja, and would help Albanian integration in the community. He said that the municipality faced migration problems, adding that there was not enough infrastructure and a high unemployment rate, but that the government was about to change that. Cvetkovic said that the government wanted to invest in industry, stating that he expected work to resume in local mines and that reconstruction of the Leskovac-Medvedja road would begin soon. A national council for the Albanian minority will also be formed, and, by the end of the year, permanent offices will be opened in the southern municipalities for the protection of human rights.
