Serbia's national handball team on Monday rejected an invitation by Zadar Mayor Zivko Kolega to attend a reception. The reception was organized for all the teams which played their second-round Handball World Championship matches in this Croatian Adriatic town. Serbian squad snubs Zadar mayor This came because last Friday Kolega first ordered that the Serbian national flag be removed from Zadar's central square, later ordering the removal of all the other flags representing countries participating in the championship. Serbian Handball Federation President Velimir Marjanovic said that Kolega's "thoughtless move" resulted in the creation of a hostile environment, "regrettable since everything else in Zadar was very correct". But Kolega denied that the Serbian delegation refused to attend the reception in the City Hall, claiming that they were "too busy training". He stated that he discussed the incidents that took place in his city with representatives of the Serbian squad, adding that they were "satisfied with the treatment they received during their stay in Zadar", and that "what happened to the Serbian flag also happened to the Croatian flag". Last week Kolega said that the flags were removed after citizens complained because they were "irritated" by the Serbian national flag. In the second round of the World Handball Championships, Serbia has already played against Germany and Poland, with one draw and one loss, and is now looking at Tuesday's face-off with Macedonia.
