The sulfur dioxide pollution in the Bor neighborhood of Brezonik was yesterday at one hundred times that allowed. This morning, however, the authorities said the air was contaminated within acceptable values – 69 micrograms of sulfur dioxide per cubic meter. 300 micrograms are considered safe. Air pollution reaches record level The pollution yesterday came from the eastern Serbian copper complex RTB and its smelter, when 38,171 micrograms were measured. The alarmingly high sulfur dioxide values led to the shutting down of the smelter. The plant's management said that the pollution on Thursday came due to a combination of unfavorable weather conditions, including the high air pressure, and added that a sulfur acid processing factory about to start production will use up most of the gas from the smelter, preventing further pollution. At the end of December, the environmental and NIP ministries set aside RSD 100mn toward a project to lower sulfur dioxide emissions from Serbia's metal plants. Installment of wet electric filters at the smelter is expected in two months' time, the management also revealed.
