Two people have died in a bus crash on the Zagreb-Belgrade motorway near Nova Gradiska. A further six people were injured. Two dead in Serbian bus crash in Croatia The accident, that took place at just before 05.00 CET, occurred when the one of the bus’s tyres burst causing it to veer into the protective barrier at the side of the carriageway, whereupon it caught fire. Lasta Managing Director Velibor Sovrovic confirmed to B92 that one elderly man and a little girl died after being trapped inside the burning vehicle. “The accident took place just before 05.00 CET this morning, six passengers were injured, and two died. The most likely scenario was that the bus’s front right tyre burst, the bus then hit the side of the carriageway, and caught fire,“ said Sovrovic. The six injured passengers were admitted to a hospital in Gradiska, and all of them are stable. Two people are in intensive care. According to one passenger, Slavica Zelen, who called B92, it took the police and fire brigade over half an hour to reach the scene. “I presume that the driver must have drifted off, and the bus veered into the barrier at the side of the carriageway tearing off one side, and the bus caught fire. When it came to a stop, we couldn’t open the doors, we were screaming, I don’t know... everyone got out as best they could. There was so much smoke inside that you couldn’t see a thing, you couldn’t breathe,“ she described. Lasta’s managing director says that the remaining passengers are being taken care of and are well.
