Faulty installations caused deadly fire The fire was put out by dozens of firefighters, who were at a same time rescuing people from the building. A woman who lives on the first floor noticed the fire and the thick smoke and notified other residents of the building in Kotez, a suburb of Pancevo. The residents of the building B92 talked to late last night to were still in shock. They described their escape from the smoke and the blaze. The witnesses said that if rescuers from the nearby oil refinery had not shown up with two firefighting trucks, the number of victims would have been much higher. In addition to the three victims, which include a two-year-old child, a ten-yea-old girl, trapped in an elevator when she was rescued, was taken to a clinic in Belgrade and is treated for carbon-monoxide poisoning. A pregnant woman was also among those injured. The injuries of four other residents were not as severe, and according to on-duty doctor Dusan Stojic, their lives are not in danger. "A total number of twelve arrived to the hospital. Three of them were admitted to the surgery and gynecology departments. One child was sent to Belgrade. Five had slight breathing problems and they were kept in hospital. Unfortunately, three were found dead, suffocated,” Stojic said.
